Do you want to know when it's a good time to be offended? When you're directly insulted. Not when you think something is inappropriate. Not when you don't like the look and/or sound of something. The only acceptable time that "offended" should ever crop up within a grown person's emotions, vocabulary, and actions are when an issue directly involves them.
Want to know when it's a good time to actually SHARE that you're offended? Uh, never. No one cares.
People may pretend to care, but they don't, We, as a society, may have been legislated to care, but do we, really? No, no we do not. Being told that we should care is a long way from actually caring. Being forced to care is a sure-fire way to make people resent that they have to monitor what they say and do.
And, if you take up the cause for someone else, are you really helping? If you tell others that they can't do or say certain things because it offends someone else, or some group of someone elses, does that really work? It may cause you to feel better about yourself. It may boost your ego. And, if you badger others enough - pass laws and ostracize those who offend - maybe you will affect change. Maybe it'll be positive.
But, is limiting one person's expression to safeguard another's feelings really an improvement? Because that's what happens when we can't say something because it's deemed "offensive." We place strictures and limits on free speech. We buy into censorship.
Sure, there are those out there who say and do egregious things. They are racist, homophobic, xenophobic assholes. They spew hatred and ignorance wherever they go. They can't help it; it's who they are. And, it's people like this who created the need for hate crime laws. But, we're not talking about lynchings or mobs, here. We're talking about art and speech. We're talking about letting everyone have a voice, no matter what idiotic drivel they may mutter.
To have freedom of speech, everyone has to be free to speak.
Don't censor others, no matter how righteous you're intentions.
Don't be a Fucktard.
